Papuan Cultural Diversity: Economic Sustainability through Community Empowerment, Enhancement of Tourism and the Cultural Industry in Papua
Stimulating Local Production and Cultural Identity – Priorities and Issues.
Pernille Askerud
With basis in a sector approach to cultural industries development, the presentation will discuss priorities and issues involved in harnessing culture-based production for economic development and cultural identity in indigenous communities – with particular emphasis on the complexities involved establishing a successful programme of craft-based production. What kind of approach to project intervention and planning is needed to bridge the interests of economic development and cultural integrity – and what are the factors that must be taken into account?
The presentation will also discuss the potential of cultural industries and crafts production as an entry point to the creative economy and as a basis for the articulation of intangible knowledge of a particular culture.
With the example of Bhutan, the presentation finally seeks to illustrate moreconcretely how the many aspects of this kind of development may be broughttogether in terms of a sector development plan and a cluster approach to the implementation of various support modalities. |
